The chart above shows the relationship between the decline in union density and the decline of
the middle class. Notice how they track each other almost perfectly. The decline in union density
not only shows up in lost wages for the middle class, it also shows up as an inequality between
the rich and poor. When unions were at their highest density the income share for the top 1% was
less than 10 percent. Today, with union density at an all time low the income share for the top
1% is at an all time high of over 24% of total income share.
